Spiritual Formation

Some of you know this: you can go to college, and you can get a bachelor’s degree without a whole lot of effort. You can get the piece of paper, without actually learning much. You’re therefore a student in the very technical sense, but not in practice.

Modern Christianity can look a lot like that. You can look the part of being a Christian. You carry the title. You know the language. You have the books. You attend lectures. And yet, there’s little application to the learning that you are doing.

Jesus calls us to be followers of Him. This very practical relationship invites us to disciple (or apprentice) ourselves to Jesus, learning how he navigated the world, loved the world, related directly to God, and responded to Scripture. He invites us to be doers of the Word, not just hearers of the Word. “Come, follow me.”

At Redemption, we observe the practices of Jesus and respond by following those practices.

  • Jesus gathered in community. So, we gather in small groups.

  • Jesus diligently studied Scripture and prayed. So, we read our Bibles and pray (some of us follow the historic pattern of the Daily Office).

  • Jesus was compassionate towards those on the margins. So, we look for opportunities to serve in our community. Watch for these opportunities on our homepage and in our weekly bulletin.
